We’re Growing Our Team: Veterinary Support Assistant Wanted (Wigan)

Featured

We’re looking for a Veterinary Support Assistant to join us and support our mobile veterinary service across Wigan and the surrounding areas. This is a hands-on, people-and-pets role for someone who enjoys variety, responsibility, and being out and about rather than tied to one building all day.

If you love animals, enjoy working with people, and like the idea of being part of a calm, compassionate alternative to traditional veterinary practice, this could be a really lovely fit.

About Home Visit Pet Care

Home Visit Pet Care is an independent mobile veterinary practice. Instead of asking pets (and owners) to come to us, we bring veterinary care directly into the home.

This means:

  • Less stress for pets
  • Longer, unhurried appointments
  • A calmer, more personal experience for everyone involved

We don’t have a clinic, waiting room, or kennels. Our “consult rooms” are living rooms, kitchens, and quiet corners of family homes. It’s a very different way of working; and one our clients (and team) genuinely value.

Our team is small - but mighty. We have Alex the vet, and Louise & Toni our vet-nurses; with Ben supporting in an admin role. We are a growing, family-owned, independent practice; providing exceptional quality care and convenience for the pets of Wigan.

The Role: Veterinary Support Assistant

This is a varied role combining on-the-road support, client care, and practice admin. You’ll work closely with the vet to make sure each day runs smoothly, professionally, and with care.

Some days you’ll be out on visits accompanying the vet. Other days you’ll be supporting the practice behind the scenes. No two days are the same, and that’s very much part of the appeal.

A Day in the Life

No two days are identical, but a typical day might look something like this:

We start the day with a quick team meeting before heading out to your first home visit. You’ll often do the driving, giving the vet time to prepare notes and plan the appointment.

At each visit, you’ll help set up, support the vet during the consultation (for example by gently holding a pet or preparing equipment), reassure owners, and help keep things calm and organised. Once the visit is complete, you’ll help price treatments, take payment using our mobile systems, and get ready for the next appointment.

Between visits, there’s time to breathe; this isn’t a rushed, conveyor-belt style of work.

On quieter or non-road days, you might be answering the practice phone, replying to emails, booking appointments, or helping with general admin to keep the practice running smoothly.

You’ll finish the day knowing you’ve genuinely helped both pets and people, without the chaos and pressure of a traditional clinic environment.

Key Responsibilities

On the Road

  • Driving to and between client appointments
  • Supporting the vet during home visits (under their direction)
  • Handling pets calmly and confidently
  • Preparing equipment and assisting with procedures
  • Pricing treatments and services clearly
  • Taking payments via mobile payment systems

Practice & Admin Support

  • Answering the practice phone and responding to enquiries
  • Replying to emails and messages professionally and warmly
  • Booking and scheduling appointments
  • Updating client records
  • General admin support for a mobile practice

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • A genuine love of animals
  • Confidence handling pets
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Calm, organised, and reliable
  • Comfortable working in clients’ homes
  • Happy with a mobile role and travelling locally
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Basic IT confidence (email, booking systems, card payments)

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Experience in a veterinary, animal care, healthcare, or support role
  • Previous customer-facing or admin experience

What This Role Is Not

We believe in being clear from the start.

  • This is not a Veterinary Nurse or Student Veterinary Nurse role
  • There is no formal veterinary nurse training or qualification pathway attached
  • You will not carry out independent clinical procedures
  • All clinical support is provided under the direction of a veterinary surgeon

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys supporting others, working with animals, and being part of a close-knit team, rather than someone seeking clinical qualification or nurse training. Due to the mobile nature of the practice, we are currently unable to offer training and career paths for clinical roles, so we thought we should be open and honest about this on the job-spec.

Hours, Pay & Benefits

  • 16-32 hours per week - we are open to conversations around working hours

  • A calm, supportive working environment

This is a mobile role based around Wigan and surrounding areas. You must be comfortable travelling locally and working in different locations each day.
