Questions about Pet Travel Scheme
Whether you’re travelling for a holiday, a move abroad, or relocating a pet to a new home, here are answers to the most common questions about travel certificates and health requirements.
What certificate do I need for travel to the EU?
You’ll need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). It must be issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
What if I’m travelling outside the EU?
You’ll need an Export Health Certificate (EHC). These vary by destination, and we’ll guide you through what’s required.
Can you come to my home to issue these certificates?
Yes! We provide all travel documentation from the comfort of your home, just like our other vet services.
What is a Fit to Fly Certificate?
It’s a basic certificate that some airlines require to confirm your pet is healthy enough to fly. It’s not the same as an AHC or EHC.
How far in advance should I book?
For EU travel, at least three weeks before departure (to allow for rabies requirements). For non-EU travel, much earlier depending on the destination.
Is a microchip required?
Yes. All pets must be microchipped before travel documentation can be issued.
What if my pet’s rabies vaccination isn’t up to date?
We can vaccinate, but you'll need to wait 21 days before travel if it's a new rabies vaccine or a booster after a lapse.
How long is the AHC valid for?
It's valid for entry into the EU for 10 days, and for onward travel within the EU for 4 months.
What species do you cover?
We provide travel certificates for dogs, cats, and ferrets in line with UK rules.
Can I bring multiple pets?
Yes, up to 5 pets per traveller under standard travel rules. More than that may require special export arrangements.
